Microsoft’s Secret AI Chip Rivalry with Nvidia 👊🏽

Microsoft is reportedly developing its own AI chips to train large language models and reduce the dependency on Nvidia. The company has been working on AI chips since 2019 under the Project codenamed Athena. 

Currently, Nvidia is the only key supplier of AI server chips, with OpenAI estimated to need over 30,000 of Nvidia’s A100 GPUs for the commercialization of ChatGPT. The demand for these AI chips is syrocketing with H100 GPUs selling for more than $40,000 on ebay.

Through this maneuver Microsoft is hoping to cut costs significantly as the company continues to roll out AI-powered features in various applications.
