Meta’s new AI model can identify any object in images 👀

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has unveiled an AI model called Segment Anything Model (SAM), which can identify individual items within images and videos. The model can even identify objects which it has not encountered before in training.

Future use-cases of SAM:

  • For AI research community, SAM could be integrated into larger AI systems for multimodal understanding of things

  • In AR/VR, SAM could enable selecting objects based on user’s gaze and then turning them into 3D

  • Content Creators can use SAM to create better collages and videos by extracting image regions

The company has also released Segment Anything 1-Billion mask dataset, largest ever segmentation dataset, which is available for research purposes.
